Fire in the Hills: A Celebration of Nagaland’s New Wave of Talent at The Maroon Room

On the evening of 19th June 2026, The Maroon Room came alive with the spirit of the hills as it hosted TMR x Kalen H. Zhimomi, a one-of-a-kind experience that brought together food, music, culture, and community under one roof. Aptly titled Fire in the Hills, the event was more than a dinner—it was a celebration of the creativity, passion, and emerging talent shaping the future of the Northeast.

At the heart of the evening was Chef Kalen H. Zhimomi, one of Nagaland’s promising young culinary talents. For this special collaboration, Kalen curated an exclusive Naga Pan-Asian Fusion menu, reimagining traditional flavours through a contemporary lens. Drawing inspiration from Nagaland’s rich culinary heritage, the menu paid tribute to indigenous ingredients, bold flavours, and age-old food traditions while embracing modern techniques and presentation.

Each dish told a story. Familiar ingredients found new expressions, while traditional flavours were thoughtfully woven into contemporary creations, offering guests an experience that was both nostalgic and exciting. The result was a menu that not only delighted the palate but also sparked conversations about the evolving identity of Naga cuisine and its place on a broader culinary stage.

The collaboration held a deeper significance for The Maroon Room. With co-owner Jiyale Kath, a proud Rengma Naga entrepreneur, the venue has always maintained a close connection to the region and its people. Hosting Fire in the Hills was a natural extension of that vision—creating opportunities for local talent to showcase their craft and connect with a wider audience.

As guests explored the flavours of the evening, the atmosphere was elevated by the soulful sounds of Toshi Yimkhiung, whose live performance brought warmth, energy, and authenticity to the experience. Blending contemporary influences with his unique musical style, Toshi created the perfect soundtrack for an evening that celebrated culture in all its forms. His performance transformed the space into more than a dining venue; it became a gathering place where stories, traditions, and artistic expression came together.

What made Fire in the Hills truly special was the way it united different creative disciplines. Food and music became a shared language, connecting people from diverse backgrounds through a common appreciation for culture and craftsmanship. The event demonstrated how meaningful collaborations can create memorable experiences while also providing a platform for emerging voices to be heard and celebrated.

At The Maroon Room, experiences like these are central to our vision. We believe that restaurants can be more than places to dine—they can be spaces where ideas are exchanged, talent is nurtured, and communities come together. Through initiatives such as Fire in the Hills, we remain committed to championing the artists, musicians, chefs, and creators who are shaping the future of the Northeast.

As the evening came to a close, guests left with more than just memories of exceptional food and music. They left having witnessed a celebration of identity, creativity, and the remarkable talent emerging from the hills of Nagaland.

Fire in the Hills was not just an event—it was a reminder that some of the most exciting stories in food and culture are being written right here in the Northeast. And this is only the beginning.
